In the early 1800s Sadamoto Makino (1787-1828) authored an eight-volume picture book entitled Sōka Shasei (Flowers and Plants Drawn from Life). Volume 1 included the sixty pictures shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Sadamoto drew his picture subjects accurately but many of the names he included are no longer used. Consequently, some plants are unknown.
